STUDENT HOLIDAY CLASSES FOR 9-14 YEAR OLDS: Our classes aim to teach children sewing from a professional approach with engaging, fun projects undertaken with the right techniques. 3 mornings. $172.

MOVE OVER PETER ALEXANDER: This 5 week course teaches all the basics of reading commercial patterns, sewing and basic shirt construction techniques. You will make a classic nightshirt. $225.

Tuesday 7 August 2012

Occasional Care available for toddlers while you sew MOPA, Patchwork, crochet etc

Hi All,
  • Move Over Peter Alexander hopefully will start this Monday 13th August. $220 and runs for 5 weeks...spaces still available

  • Beginner's crochet hopefully starts Monday evening also 6.30 pm-8.30 pm $200 for 5 weeks..spaces still available

  • Boiled Wool Coat This Friday evening $85...spaces available. You need to purchase fabric from either The Fabric Store Cooper St or Tessutis Surrey Hills.

  • Still trying to get Beginner's Patchwork started on a Tuesday night; there may be interest  in as a midweek daytime class (see below) or a Sunday....I welcome feedback to get this going

  • Also still trying to get skirts going.

  • There is good interest in the express dress and shawl coat...these will be run as 2X2 hour classes and will be incredibly productive.Come in have a look at them and try them on.
  • I thought there would be a lot of interest in the baby's heirloom blanket that would be great as an alternative shower tea. Perhaps there is concern that it could end up an unfinished project. The squares are quite quick to do. The borders are straight forward and Elizabeth will guide you through the blocking etc. I thought perhaps it could be come part of a large blanket as 'the baby' grew, incorporating say cricket bat, frock etc and eventually a dog, house etc....I really think it is worth another look.

  • At last I have found a local Occasional Childcare place that may be of interest to those mothers who want to take a morning class but have the issue of childcare. It is the Ashfield Baptist Childcare. They take 3 yrs and up as well as under 3. There is a time slot that is 8.30 am-11.30. am and the costs seem reasonable; around $30.00. It comes under the Occasional Care Program and Childcare Benefit is available to those who qualify.
I have spoken to them and they seem willing to try to work towards accommodating a small group of children whose mothers want to do a sewing session with us.
kids block 300x223 Drop In Child CareI envisage a group of 6 could drop their children off, do a class 9-11 eg Move Over Peter Alexander, and be back to pick children up by 11.30. I am under the impression if we asked for a weekly booking for a block, say 5 weeks every Wednesday, that that could be accommodated. It would add a further $150 to a 5 week class that would already cost $220 but I think it sounds like a good opportunity.ack. You may have a mother's group interested or wish to come alone; email me your feedback.

Sydney you need to start sewing!

Remember the mantra that essentials were food, clothing and shelter? We have become so used to outsourcing that most city dwellers have lost the skills to produce these essential items.
Why bother when you can buy them cheaply?..., natural advantage and economies of specialisation was the answer from a high school text. This fails to recognise changing labour costs over time and the importance of retaining knowledge within a society. I am amazed that so many customers say their grandmothers were seamstresses and now there is a demand for machinists and seamstresses that cannot be filled. There is  arrogance and hubris  in a society that  believes they will always be able to afford to employ someone to provide these essential services. By losing the knowledge we put ourselves at a disadvantage.
Hence my overture to Sydney to start sewing!

Classes coming that have vacancies

  • Draft and make a skirt that fits  ...Thursday evenings  starting July 12th...6 weeks $300
  • School holidays student classes 9-14 ...for beginners and post beginners. It really works well if a few friends come together.
  • Introduction to patchwork and quilting Tuesday evenings starting, hopefully,July 3rd 4 weeks $200
Again I encourage everyone to really think about HALF MADE NEVER FINISHED,  on a Friday nigh, $50t and KNITTING AND  CROCHETING CIRCLE ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON. $40 I am sure once people realise  the benefits and how flexible and enjoyable these classes are they would really take off.
Consider
Classes are stand alone...you don't have to commit to  course hence are ideal for shift workers
you can work on your own project under the guidance of Joss or Elizabeth . Choose a pattern and be guided through with support.
The group dynamic is a great way to exchange ideas, be stimulated and encouraged as well as have an enjoyable few hours.
We have a fabulous store of patterns most of which are tried so we can give you advice and suggestions.
Suggestions for a Friday night include sewing children's outfit, cushions and bolsters, make yourself a dress/ skirt.
Suggestions for Saturday afternoon include bringing along your half made jumper to get the impetus to finish it, come with neither wool nor pattern and we can get you started on a project, get help blocking and sewing up granny squares etc

Don't forget those interested in boiled wool coat to call in to check sizes and after Thursday pick up pattern
Don't forget to book into FREE Baby Lock demonstration 28th June 6.30-8.30

All of the above you need to email for bookings ...that includes Friday Half made never finished and Sat afternoon Knit and Crochet

NOTE : The shop will be CLOSED today TUESDAY due to unavoidable commitments

One of our student's projects in design process

The latest from the Emporium

classes coming up

Hi All,
  • Tuesday evenings.  I am asking for expressions of interest for Move Over Peter Alexander  for 7-9pm...5 weeks . THe other option is Thursday evening 7-9. Note Intro to handsewing delayed till more interest.
  • Wednesday evenings: Intro to Patchwork is nearing the end of the course. Everyone has enjoyed it thoroughly. I am asking for expressions of interest for either  Intro to Patchwork OR Patchwork and Quilting for post beginners. $200 4 weeks
  • Thursday evenings Frocks or skirts..still trying to get enough interest for either to run (or MOPA)
  • Friday morning 10 o'clock onwards: We were hoping to get an ongoing group who would work through a program that the group could determine. If there is a group of 4 who would like to do an ongoing program we are happy to facilitate. I envisage that they would do the first two Intro classes and then suggest to Joss what they would like. They may for example want soft furnishings, childrenswear , Halfmade never finished or MOPA. The understanding would be that the whole group would have to commit. We feel this could be a great opportunity to become proficient in the areas of sewing of most interest while enjoying the group dynamic. Perhaps a joint child minding could be arranged.
  • Friday evening  this week Joss is away  so no HMNF(see Sat afternoon). This is a great time to get projects started, developed or finished. If you are a sewer and need motivation, can't committo MOPA or other but want to get on with something, want to do 'Sewing for young Children but frustrated that we haven't got another course going, looking for inspiration...HMNF is for you.
  • Sat afternoon 19th. Trousers again delayed a week but Soft Furnishings...Cushions 3ways. $95 (If we don't get enough we may instead do HMNF. )
  • Knitting intermediate Saturday afternoons. Knitting beginners Thursday evenings..places available.

Easter trading/ school students, trousers, Intro to patchwork,

We are open Easter Saturday but closed Fri, Sun/Mon.As autumn is the time to think of home comforts it is a good time to knit, crochet, sew and generally make the 'house a home'. To this end we are running Sort Furnishings/ cushions. on a Saturday. Also we are running Intro to Patchwork/quilting. I always say I am not a patch on a quilter but I appreciate a good quilt. They are the most functional throw, make a bedroom look beautiful and they seem to be self cleaning! Never say never. Everyone should do one quilt in their lives and here is a great chance to learn from a fabulous quilter. See attachment.
We are running school student's morning course in the holidays. Week 2 is full but week 1 , 11,12 and13th still has vacancies for 10-14 yr olds who have some sewing experience. 9-12, email if interested $165.

If there are any school students wanting to have a small group learn to knit/crochet please email with suggested times etc.

I have made a mistake re trousers. At this stage it should be Thursday evening and Sat afternoon. Please email

See we have bow ties running...male and female all welcome.

Skirts will not run Fri night instead we will revert to Half-made-never-finished for an extra few weeks till enough to make a viable class.

Frocks looks as if it will not get up; I was swamped with lots of interest and it has not translated into a viable class.

Move Over Peter Alexander- All of those who have done our Intro courses in the last few months this is a great follow on. It teaches you to read commercial patterns, sew stretch , tricks of laying and cutting etc.

Don't forget thatif you eant specific times for a class the best thing to do is get a few friends and that is a start for us.

Keep looking at the website.
Happy Easter
Sarah

Half-Made-Never-Finished

Wake up Saturday morning without feeling the effects of over indulgence of Friday night and feel the serotonin of creativity!
We are trying to establish Friday evenings as a relaxed but constructive class on the 'half-made-never-finished' theme. This class is $50.00 and runs for 2.5 hours. It is aimed at all levels other than beginners. We are also adding another element. During the evening we will demonstrate a particular process that may be of interest. This will be of particular benefit to those who are already skilled but would like upskilling. Hopefully it would also appeal to Textile/Design students.

This Friday it will a technique of finishing singlet tops using the 4 thread overlocker and rolled hem instead of the usual coverstitch finish. This demonstration will only take 10 minutes. If you are not interested you can, of course, just go on sewing your own project. We are also including tea! And biscuits! So you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere than our other classes!
